Now in development

The Ambassador M. Serajul Islam Center of Excellence in Diplomacy

Preparing the next generation to represent Bangladesh on the global stage.

The vision

A named center with a published intellectual foundation, an annual memorial lecture and academic conference, new research, and stronger preparation for students pursuing diplomacy and policy careers.

Bangladesh Empowered is developing a university-based center that trains and connects the next generation of Bangladeshi diplomats, policy researchers, and public servants. It's designed to run on a host university's existing faculty, space, and accreditation, so every dollar raised goes to programming rather than buildings.

Phase 1

A founding international conference in 2027, an annual Ambassador M. Serajul Islam Memorial Lecture, and a communication and confidence-building track.

Built on existing assets

Phase 1 runs on a host university's existing programs, faculty, and space, with no new infrastructure.

Why now

On 8 August 2026, Bangladesh Empowered launched Reclaiming Bangladesh: Democracy, Governance and Nation Building in Dhaka. The book collects the selected writings of Ambassador M. Serajul Islam and is published by University Press Limited. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, now President of Bangladesh, attended as Chief Guest.

The launch made one thing clear. Ambassador Islam's work on constitutional order, ethical public service, and nation-building isn't only a historical record. It's a living curriculum and a blueprint for policymakers as they rebuild the country.

An international conference on the book's themes, planned for 2027, becomes the Center's founding activity, and the start of a standing center that carries Ambassador Islam's legacy forward year after year.

What the Center will do

01

Diplomatic Training and Leadership Development

A certificate or concentration in diplomatic practice, drawing on Ambassador Islam's framework of strategic thinking, public service ethics, and civic responsibility.

Mentorship pairing students, including Future Leaders scholars, with practitioners and retired diplomats, including preparation for the BCS (Foreign Affairs) examination.

Case studies and simulations built from Ambassador Islam's own diplomatic record.

Its research follows the five themes of Reclaiming Bangladesh, from electoral legitimacy and constitutional order to regional and global diplomacy.

02

Policy Research and Convening

An annual international academic conference on constitutional order, governance, and diplomacy.

A regular Ambassador M. Serajul Islam Memorial Lecture by a distinguished diplomat or scholar, plus a speaker series and, over time, visiting fellows.

Working papers and policy briefs by scholarship recipients, presented at the annual conference.

03

Communication, Confidence, and Cultural Fluency

A certificate-bearing track in presentation skills and confidence building, covering public speaking and oral and written communication.

Negotiation training and cross-cultural fluency to represent Bangladesh credibly at the negotiating table and in other high-stakes settings.

Practitioner-led sessions on briefing, media engagement, and presenting under pressure.

What the host university provides

Existing student programs to build the communication track on

It fills a distinct gap. Bangladesh already has strong convening platforms, such as the Centre for Governance Studies' Bay of Bengal Conversation and the roundtables of the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies. The Center doesn't compete with them. It's university-based and student-centered: it trains the next generation and gives students direct access to practitioners.

It builds on what already exists. The host university contributes the infrastructure. Bangladesh Empowered contributes the legacy, networks, and programming. Philanthropic support goes straight to what students experience.

What Bangladesh Empowered provides

Ambassador Islam's writings, record of service, and framework

Programming support for the memorial lecture, founding conference, and speaker series

Introductions to diaspora, diplomatic, and policy contacts

Naming, branding, and communications support, subject to university approval

Volunteer sessions from retired diplomats in its network

It has proven precedent. Georgetown University's Institute for the Study of Diplomacy pairs certificates in diplomatic studies with more than 250 practitioner-written case studies and regular policy dialogues.

The Center will operate as an independent, non-partisan academic forum. Like Ambassador Islam's own writing, it will hold every government and party to the same standard of accountable, constitutional governance. Its advisory board will include scholars and practitioners from across the political spectrum.

Independent, non-partisan, and accountable

How your support helps

Because the host university provides the infrastructure, founding gifts to Bangladesh Empowered fund what makes the Center come alive.

The founding conference and memorial lecture

Speaker identification, outreach, and programming.

Mentorship

Connecting scholars with diplomats and practitioners.

Student research

Scholars' working papers and policy briefs, presented on a public stage.

The scholars themselves

Ambassador Serajul Islam Future Leaders Scholarships for students with financial need and academic promise.

We'll review progress each year against a small set of measures agreed with our university partner, such as students trained and mentored, lectures and conferences held, and research produced.

Founding supporters who join now help shape it from the start.
